Why Breed Matters
Selective breeding has produced distinct breeds with characteristic traits—but also with inherited predispositions to certain diseases. Knowing your dog's breed (or breed mix) helps you and your veterinarian anticipate, screen for, and manage conditions common in that breed. This guide covers 20 popular breeds and their notable health concerns.
| Breed | Key Predispositions | Screening/Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Golden Retriever | Hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia | Annual wellness; abdominal ultrasound in seniors; OFA hips/elbows |
| Labrador Retriever | Hip/elbow dysplasia, obesity, exercise-induced collapse | OFA screening; weight management; avoid overexertion in heat |
| German Shepherd | Degenerative myelopathy (DM), hip dysplasia, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency | DM genetic test; OFA hips; monitor for weakness |
| French Bulldog | BOAS, IVDD, skin fold dermatitis, allergies | BOAS assessment; avoid obesity; skin fold care |
| Bulldog (English) | BOAS, hip dysplasia, skin issues, heat sensitivity | BOAS management; weight control; cool environment |
| Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Mitral valve disease (MVD), syringomyelia, patellar luxation | Annual cardiac auscultation; consider echocardiogram |
| Dachshund | IVDD (intervertebral disc disease), obesity | Limit jumping; weight management; back support |
| Poodle (Standard) | Hip dysplasia, Addison disease, sebaceous adenitis | OFA hips; monitor for lethargy, vomiting (Addison) |

Key Conditions Explained
Hemangiosarcoma: Malignant tumor of blood vessels; often affects spleen, heart, liver. Golden Retrievers are overrepresented. Degenerative myelopathy (DM): Progressive spinal cord degeneration; GSDs and others. Genetic test available. Mitral valve disease: Cavaliers often develop early-onset MVD. ARVC: Boxer cardiomyopathy; can cause sudden death. IVDD: Disc herniation; Dachshunds and other chondrodystrophic breeds at risk.
When to See a Vet
Breed awareness helps you recognize early signs. Lameness, collapse, breathing difficulty, sudden weakness, or any concerning symptom should prompt a visit. Discuss breed-specific screening with your veterinarian.
